Brief
After the bushfires ravaged their Blue Mountains home, these clients came to us to design, manufacture and install their kitchen and house joinery. The goal being to use sustainable materials to create a functional and elegant interior house fitout for their new sustainable house, within a set budget. A kitchen and window seat, 2 x bedroom wardrobes, 2 x ensuites, laundry, entertainment unit, bookshelves, bedside tables, bench seat and entry seat and storage.
Outcome
With a brand new house, the opportunity arises to really think about how we live, what our habits are and what we need to store. These clients took advantage of the opportunity to allow us to design for their lifestyle as well as their space. Birch plywood provides the base for the majority of the joinery with the addition of redgum and recyled timber elements to add pop. Used for the cabinetry , doors and drawers and finished with elements of timber. Salvaged redgum and recycled timber benchtops add colour and warmth. Fingerpull cutouts replace handles, providing a sleek and easy to use solution for opening the doors and drawers. All drawers have soft closed drawer runners.
The Plywood, Redgum and Stainless Steel Kitchen
Designed to take advantage of the gorgeous bush Blue Mountains view, this kitchen is very practical to use. The redgum island bench provides a stunning centrepiece to the kitchen along with practical space to cook, bake and prepare. At 2700 or 2.7 m long, there is plenty of room for more than one person to work at the island bench. And with 1200mm or 1.2m between the island bench and the rest of the kitchen, there is ample room for the whole family to be working in the family together.
The custom stainless steel bench top provides an easy to clean, seamfree surface for the sink and back bench providing a very practical cooking and cleaning surface.
Fingerjointed, solid, plywood drawers provide durability and stability. And the displayed fingerjoints are part of the kitchen style.
Cabinetry encloses the rangehood and ventilation system. And lights underneath the rangehood shelving provide light for the cooktop area. The redgum shelving providing practical storage for cookbooks and mugs; oft used items.
The lefthand side cabinetry provides general storage
The Plywood and Recycled Timber Bookshelves and Storage
The stepped bookshelf’s slightly asymmetrical design is light on the wall. The design is deliberately variable to provides a mix of boxes with backs for extra stability and floating shelves. The lower cupboards and drawers have a recycled timber bench top.
The Plywood and Recycled Timber Entertainment Unit
This simple plywood and recycled timber entertainment unit provides storage for the TV related gear. The TV cables feed down into a discrete hole in the bench top, so the cables are stored out of sight in the cupboards. The rounded corner shelves provide easy storage for books and magazines.
Plywood and Redgum Entry Bench Seat and Hanging
The plywood and redgum entry bench seat and hanging provides space at the house entry for hanging coats and storing shoes etc. Whilst also providing space to sit down to put on and take off shoes and all those things we do when we go to leave or enter our houses. Sliding doors provide easy access to the space underneath the bench seat.
